A 45-year-old Bolivian man was arrested at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport en route to Cambodia after customs officers found 5.2 kilogrammes of cocaine worth about 20 million baht in his luggage.

Customs Department deputy director-general Chamroen Photiyod told a press conference at his department on Wednesday that Jose Alberto Martinez Soto was arrested at the airport on Tuesday afternoon.

He had travelled by Emirates Airline from Sao Paulo in Brazil on Monday, with a stopover in Dubai.

His flight landed at Bangkok about 12.30pm on Tuesday. When his two bags were x-rayed, customs officers detected suspicious items. A search revealed silver-coloured plastic packages of cocaine concealed in the bags in false compartments.

The packaged cocaine weighed 5.2kg and was valued at an estimated 20.8 million baht on the street, Mr Chamroen said.

Mr Martinez confessed that he received the drug from a man in Sao Paulo and was paid the equivalent of about 180,000 baht to smuggle it through Thailand to Cambodia, according to Mr Charoen.
